Summary (English)	An Act to amend the Canada Evidence Act and the Criminal Code in respect of persons with disabilities, to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act in respect of persons with disabilities and other matters and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, S.C. 1998, c. 9, received Royal Assent on 12 May 1998, and confirms that persons with disabilities should be provided with additional protection in the criminal justice system to ensure that their equality rights are respected, that discriminatory barriers are removed and that they fully participate in society. The Act includes provisions to allow witnesses with communication disabilities to be provided with assistance and to use sensory means to identify an accused if necessary or to serve on juries, to create an offence regarding the sexual exploitation of a person with disabilities who is in a relationship of dependency, to prevent discrimination against people who are protected by the Canadian Human Rights Act, and to establish the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Section 1 to 50 came into force on 30 June 1998. (Bill S-5, 51 sections, pp. 76-107).
(French)	La Loi modifiant la Loi sur la preuve au Canada, le Code criminel et la Loi canadienne sur les droits de la personne relativement aux personnes handicapées et, en ce qui concerne la Loi canadienne sur les droits de la personne, à d'autres matières, et modifiant d'autres lois en conséquence, L.C. 1998, ch. 9, a reçu la sanction royale le 12 mai 1998, et elle confirme que les personnes handicapées devraient bénéficier d'une protection étendue dans le système de justice pénale afin de renforcer leur droit à l'égalité, d'éliminer la discrimination et de leur permettre de participer pleinement à la société. La Loi comprend des dispositions permettant aux témoins qui éprouvent de la difficulté à communiquer en raison d'une déficience de bénéficier d'aide et de se fonder sur leur perception sensorielle-visuelle ou autre afin d'identifier un accusé ou de faire partie d'un jury, et elle crée une infraction concernant les personnes en situation d'autorité vis à vis d'une personne qui est en situation de dépendance afin d'éliminer la discrimination à l'endroit des personnes protégées par la Loi canadienne sur les droits de la personne, et d'avoir recours au Tribunal canadien des droits de la personne. Les articles 1 à 50 sont entrés en vigueur le 30 juin 1998 (projet de loi S-5, 51 articles, p. 76 à 107).
