The National Defense Education Law contains 15 articles and was promulgated by the president on 2 February 2005. The law is enacted with the goal of promoting national defense education for all people, so as to strengthen the knowledge of national defense for all people and conception of defending the country by all people, perfect the development of national defense, and ensure national safety. The essential points are:
1)To provide for the central and local competent authorities under this law, and their functions and duties. (Articles 2, 3 and 4)
2)To indicate the scope of national defense education, and that the education shall be administered persistently. (Article 5)
3)To set forth the specific activities that shall be administered by the Executive Yuan, schools at various levels, governmental agencies at various levels, and competent authorities at various levels (Articles 6, 7. 8, 9, 10 and 11)
4)To specify that administrative leave shall be granted to employees of governmental agencies (institutions), schools and enterprises who participate in activities in connection with ‘national defense education’. (Article 12)
5)To specify that competent authorities at various levels shall budget for promoting ‘national defense education’. (Article 13)
6)To specify that government agencies (institutions), organizations or individuals administering ‘national defense education’ with outstanding performance shall be properly rewarded. (Article 14)
